Laurie & Cindy’s Wedding Low Wood Bay Resort and Spa

wedding breakfast low wood

The morning of Laurie and Cindy’s wedding was very wet, not what you expect in August. But this in the Lake District in summer. I met up with both the girls for a few getting ready photos.

The ceremony was being held in the Gallery , which is a beautiful room flooded with light. Great for photographs.

Because the weather was so wet , we had to do all but a few photographs indoors. But the weather did not stop everyone having a fantastic time ans you can see Laurie and Cindy never stopped smiling all day.

The wedding breakfast was held in the Lakes Suite and Gemma and her team dressed the room beautifully. The stunning wedding cake was made by Sugar Ruffles

After the speeches we went for a walk around the beautiful hotel to take some more photographs. Even when its wet there are places to get some lovely photographs.

The stunning location on the edge of Windermere makes it’s the perfect wedding venue.  For me as a photographer the wonderful scenery is ideal for capturing your wedding photographs,  making lasting memories of your very special day.

Low wood Bay

The Low Wood Hotel can accommodate smaller weddings in the beautiful  Buckley Room, and right up to 280 guests in The Lakes Suite for those larger celebrations.  After the wedding ceremony the happy couple and their guests can go across to the lawns by the lake and take in the wonderful scenery and maybe take a cruise around the lake.

Wedding venue

” One of the best weddings I’ve ever been to. Cracking venue, lovely staff. Perfect timing with the food and a lake cruise to boot!

If you’re thinking of booking a civil ceremony then this place is hard to beat. Read less “

Wedding at the Low Wood

” Myself & my new husband are absolutely over the moon with the wedding team & their attention to detail at the Low Wood for our special day. They were cool, calm & collected throughout the wedding day, it went off without a hitch which is thanks to Sophie & her precision alongside James & his brilliant MC skills. Thanks so much!! Fabulous place, superb food, great views, amazing team of people! Highly recommend this venue for your wedding!!! “

Our daughters wedding

” Our daughter got married here in June 2018 and the staff could not have been more accommodating. Excellent service, food, venue, decoration, flowers, the lot
We had a cruise on Lake Windermere which was fabulous with stunning scenery. The staff on the boat were tremendous.
The evening reception and was fabulous with a stunning room and the hog roast was second to none.
A memorable day when all our family and friends commented it was the best wedding they had been too. Thank you, Low Wood for making our daughter and son in law’s dream come true xx “

Just WOW!

” We had our son and new daughter-in-law’s wedding reception here on Saturday 26th August and have to say the whole day and experience was nothing short of perfection. From the minute we chose Low Wood as the venue we were extremely impressed. We visited later on for the ‘taster’ to choose the menu – excellent choice of food options.

Gemma the wedding co-ordinator was always very helpful whilst organising everything for the wedding. We were blessed with good weather which was the icing on the cake, The whole day went very smoothly, the staff were excellent, always offering help and catering for our needs. Nothing was a problem. The food at the reception was out of this world. To say they catered for 160 guests during the day and 240 in the evening, there was not one complaint about the food.

The whole setting of Low Wood was so very special, beautiful outlook and beautiful decor and although the renovation work was still ongoing it wasn’t a problem to us.

A lot of the guests stayed the night – another wonderful experience. The newly refurnished rooms were the best we have stayed in, with lots of lovely little personal touches. Could not fault it at all.

For the price of the wedding package, you will have to go a long way to find any better value than Low Wood Bay. Thank you all for making the day so very special for us. Wish we could do it all again! “

History

HOTELS, especially old hotels, can provide rich pickings for writers and researchers. Things tend to happen in hotels and their visitors include many people in the public eye.

Take this list

Take this list: Poet William Wordsworth, author John Ruskin, artists John Constable and J. M. W. Turner, film stars Joan Collins and Tom Cruise, TV personalities Judith Chalmers, Rolf Harris and Chris Tarrant, pop star Shakin’ Stevens and snooker players Terry Griffiths and Tony Knowles.

All these famous folk

All these famous folk, and many more, have enjoyed the hospitality of the Low Wood Hotel, Windermere, the history of which has just been written by Michael Berry and Reid Yuen, under the title of A Sunlit, Intimate Gift … Low Wood on Windermere: Three Hundred Years of Lakeland History (writes JOHN HURST).

The parish registers

The parish registers of Ambleside show that in 1718-19 a small farmstead at Low Wood was developed into a hostelry. The word ‘tourist’ was not in the English dictionary at that time, but the opening of the Kendal to Keswick turnpike road in 1762 ended the isolation of the area, and the hotel attracted discriminating visitors with its offer of “Neat post-chaises, gigs and cars, pleasure boats, potted char”.

As early as 1825

As early as 1825 an author named John Briggs wrote in glowing terms of Low Wood puddings. The hotel still serves a traditional Low Wood sweet toffee pudding and offers interested diners a copy of the recipe.

COURTHOUSE, TOO

People visited Low Wood for all kinds of reasons around that time. Wrongdoers attended the Windermere Petty Sessions Courts, held on the first Tuesday of every month, and, much later in the 19th Century, John Ruskin sketched the Langdale Pikes from the hotel garden.

Local landowners

Local landowners and other dignitaries met at the hotel in 1847 to voice their opposition to the mooted extension of the railway line along the Windermere lake shore. Wordsworth, the poet, made a long speech, said to be “plaintive and deprecatory”.

The authors devote

The authors devote a chapter to an era when the Logan family ran the hotel, beginning in 1845 when the tenancy was taken by a 36-year-old Scot, Robert Bruce Aeneas Logan.

HONEYMOON HOTEL

members of the Logan family

Succeeding members of the Logan family would continue the Low Wood tenancy for 96 years and consolidate the reputation for excellence. The quiet and sublime location, coupled with the legendary and poetic associations, made the hotel particularly popular with honeymooners.

boasted of “Electric light in every room”

In an advertisement published in 1929, the proprietor boasted of “Electric light in every room”, with a croquet lawn an added facility. Breakfast and lunch cost three shillings apiece, with dinner priced at five shillings.

setting of record speeds

Powerboat ace Norman Buckley, famous for his setting of record speeds in a series of Miss Windermere s, became first the tenant and then the owner of the Low Wood and made it the biggest hotel in the Lake District, with 140 bedrooms.

Mr. Buckley bought two more hotels and in 1972 he asked his nephew, Michael Berry co-author of the book to join him in their direction and management.
