History of the hotel
Cragwood Country House was deigned by Frank Dunkerly. And built in 1910 for the industrialist Albert Walburton. Built with stone quarried from its own grounds, which are now a feature of the water gardens.
Cragwood. Situated right next to the incredibly popular attraction of Brockhole Visitor Centre. http://www.brockhole.co.uk. Brockhole is a fantastic location filled with activities. Such as a high ropes course, adventure play. All sorts of family activities from pony trekking to crazy golf. And you can also catch the famous Windermere Lake Cruise from their jetty. We are also 2 miles (3.22 kilometres) from Ambleside. And 3 miles (4.83 kilometres) from Bowness. Where you will find popular activities such as the world of Beatrix Potter. Wray Castle is also a short drive away, as is the famous writer, Wordsworth’s old house, Dove Cottage.
truly unique ceremony
My husband and I chose the Cragwood as our wedding venue because of its immaculate gardens. Peaceful and secluded location, stunning views of the lake and mountains. For those all important photographs and the little garden gazebo. Which, if the weather permitted, would provide a truly unique ceremony.
What we weren’t aware of beforehand is the intangible excellence of all the staff. who transformed our entire weekend from “fabulous” to “perfect”. From the moment we arrived. Albert the GM greeted us with the enthusiasm and warmth you could expect from one of your wedding guests. He and all the team could not be more attentive. Not just to us, but to all our guests throughout the whole weekend. And the feedback received was simply impeccable.
The food was absolutely exquisite. The Chefs there are particularly talented. A Michelin Star at some point in the not too distant future ? .
I can not express enough how truly fabulous the Cragwood is as a wedding venue. And my husband and I will be sure to revisit again on many occasions in the future.
We have just celebrated our 10 year wedding anniversary. Renewing our vows at Cragwood Country House Hotel. From checking in to departure, we felt so special from start to finish. Our intimate event was only 9 people. But the service we received was absolutely amazing and the staff couldn’t do enough for us. The manager, Albert went above and beyond- and was excellent with our two children. The wedding coordinator, Emily, and Trudy were also amazing. And made sure that they went through every detail on arrival to make sure everything was perfect! The venue itself was immaculate and the grounds, stunning. Also, the food was delicious and beautifully presented. I cannot recommend Cragwood highly enough- we are already planning to stay again. Thank you for the most amazing time and wonderful memories. Perfect venue, perfect wedding…a wonderful weekend and memorable stay. Superlative staff and accomodation.
Where do I start? Perfect, perfect… Why would you NOT choose this for your wedding venue or, indeed, any celebrations? OK, I will try to describe our wonderful experience. From the groom’s mother perspective. From walking into reception. Warm, friendly, attentive and very professional staff. This highest level of service remained a constant throughout our weekend stay. Room service, restaurant, bar, ceremony. Staff were always on hand to support, smile and meet our every need. Never have I been presented with such a knowledgeable young bar expert.
range of Gins
The range of Gins and his product knowledge was more than exceptional, amazing really. Our room was superb. Well equipped, beautifully clean and serviced. And perfectly positioned for us to admire the joyously beautiful views of the surrounding well tended gardens and the Lake. Simply breathtaking. The gardens were pleasure personified. Breakfast was superb with many choices available, accommodating different dietary requirements very nicely. Thank you. Lots of room to ensure quiet times, peaceful moments. Group activities all well appointed. The house is beautiful with an interesting history and is very well maintained.
I visited a lot of guest rooms. All individual, beautifully presented, comfortable and with exceptional views. The wedding day was joyous from waking to the wee small hours. The ceremony, outdoors, was beautifully set up and managed. Special credit to the registrars who were wonderful. The wedding breakfast. Held in the large hall was again, simply beautifully set up and executed. Greatly valued the opportunity to find a space for quiet contemplation. There were many of those both indoors and outside. If I could find a criticism, I would, if only for balance here but honestly, I can’t find one. Thank you to Cragwood House management. And every single staff member for your care, diligence, thoughtfulness and professionalism. And clear desire to help create what became a perfect day, perfect weekend and happily memorable wedding.

How wonderful to be able to contribute to lifelong memories in such a capable manner. For those considering a wedding or celebratory package. I hope that you will find this venue as wonderful as our families and friends found it to be. I would not hesitate to book this hotel again and will reiterate that the staff team. From management through to departmental staff are a highly trained and most effective team. And really do strive to be available and accommodating.
gardens are exquisite
What more could we ask for? Back to our room… loved the Nespresso machine. Fluffy towels, premium bed linen, comfortable furniture, room service. And views onto the terrace, gardens and lake. Finally, the gardens are exquisite. Detecting the hard work of the gardening team. Amazing backdrops for those all important photography opportunities. Did I say thank you? To finish… Memorable day and memorable weekend. I will cherish until my memories begin to fade. And then I will have the many photos in which Lake Windermere features.
